Normal service resumed with Subterranea and each subsequent IQ release has been a highly anticipated delight. I had just bought a black Fender Stratocaster from Woody’s brother, Nick, and I was very keen to put the tremolo arm to use. On tongue-twister “On The Beat Pete”, I gave it a good old twang up. (The false endings were inspired by Roxy Music’s “Re-Make / Re-Model”, by the way). “Baggy myiq com Trousers” was the first single I’d written.

Some hills have to be taken in first gear; in these conditions, there is sometimes growling from the engine and much vibration which doesn’t make for a smooth drive. It’s also a bit weird on the motorway, faced with a long slow hill, to have to change gear when doing 70mph. Otherwise it’s get into the inside lane and crawl along. But the biggest put-off (apart from performance on hills) is the centre console.

Whatever your goals, it’s the struggle to get there that’s most rewarding. It’s almost as if life itself is inviting us to embrace difficulty—not as punishment but as a design feature. Think of young kids in school, when the bell rings for recess. Your mind needs a recess to wander in an unstructured manner. Often in this recess, an idea or solution may emerge to an issue you have been dealing with. Well, you surprise everyone with a bit of a thumping ‘palate cleanser’ from the Paul Menel era Nomzamo album from 1987 in No Love Lost, followed by Durrant’s great synth solo on The Magic Roundabout, from 1985’s The Wake.

I have a 2014 iQ2 with only 22,000 miles on it but this is my third iQ and I think they are great. Lots of room in the front and very comfortable with a lot of big car extras not normally found on city cars. It can be a bit noisy on a motorway BUT it holds its own with the traffic at 70+ mph, and still has oomph to get out of the way. Mine is an automatic (lovely and smooth and it seems to change gear even though it is a CVT) and so I pay £20 a year in tax! I keep the rear seats down all the time for my two dogs but the rear seats are a bit cramped anyway. Nippy engine, great economy, cheap to run, cheap to service at Fish Brothers Toyota in Swindon.
A new carbonfibre strut was implemented into the engine compartment, too, as were larger front brakes and modified dampers. A few changes were made to its exterior design as well, with the addition of a wider front grille and a carbonfibre diffuser that helped to increase downforce by 10%. It will still do a number on many supercars today, and few were able to top its blistering 7min 26.7sec Nürburgring Nordschleife lap.
